Guitar Lessons
Chris gives private guitar lessons to students of all ages at his SoHo location. The lessons are organized and focused, yet relaxed and fun. His main approach involves learning songs while focusing on the details and techniques involved, such as strumming, left hand fingering, chord selection and sound production. Students of blues and rock and those seeking to improve their lead playing will learn a comprehensive system of pentatonic and blues scales, and will work on a large vocabulary of licks and techniques, eventually learning complete solos by the usual suspects plus some of Chris’ favorites, including Freddie King, BB King, Mick Taylor, Rick Derringer, T-Bone Walker and Hubert Sumlin.
Chris works from a group of over two hundred songs and transcribed solos, so there's always a steady stream of classroom tested material and ideas. His free handouts are well-conceived and easy to read. Students are encouraged to bring in their own song choices, as well.
Chris also teaches finger-picking (see the mp3 on the music page, "Mississippi Medley"), slide guitar (in open and standard tunings), music theory, modal improvisation, note reading and all fundamental music techniques. Bass lessons are also available.
For a sample of Chris’ teaching materials, see the links below. "Anatomy of a Chord Chart" will help you if you've never read a chord chart before. Next is "Absolute Beginners," which furthers the idea with a short piece that can be played by anyone who can read a basic chord chart. “Blues Scale Form I in A.” is the pentatonic blues scale that forms the basis of so many rock riffs and licks. “Easy Blues Licks" presents some basic blues licks that can be learned by students with a few months of guitar under their belt.
